Retail receipts in 30 seconds

A retail receipt is the document a store issues at checkout — itemizing every product purchased with its SKU, quantity, price, applied discounts, sales tax, and total. Retail receipts differ from grocery or restaurant receipts in three ways: they include SKU/UPC codes beside each item, often display discounts and savings as separate lines, and end with return policy language stating the window for refunds or exchanges.

The Receipt Maker tool above generates these instantly for legitimate purposes — replacing lost retail receipts, supporting expense reports or insurance claims, documenting business purchases, or testing point-of-sale systems.

What you can build with this tool

The retail template handles every common store format:

  • Department store receipts — Macy’s, Nordstrom, Kohl’s style with category headers, multiple tax rates, loyalty program lines
  • Big-box retail — Walmart, Target, Best Buy format with detailed transaction info, EFT payment details, and return policy footer
  • Specialty retail — Apple Store, Sephora, Nike, electronics stores with serial numbers, warranty info, and protection plans
  • Clothing and apparel — H&M, Zara, Old Navy with size/color details, return windows clearly stated
  • Home improvement — Home Depot, Lowe’s with contractor codes, bulk pricing, tool rentals
  • Convenience store / mini-mart — 7-Eleven, Wawa, bodega-style simpler layouts
  • Online order pickup — buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS) format with order number and confirmation

How to make a retail receipt: 3 steps

  1. Enter the store details. Type in the store name (Target, Best Buy, Macy’s, etc.), full address, phone number, and store number. Most chains print a 4–5 digit store ID prominently. Add the cashier ID and register number for extra realism. Upload a store logo if you have one.
  2. Add the items with SKUs. Add each item as a line — name, SKU/UPC code, quantity, unit price, line total. Real retail receipts almost always show 12-digit UPC codes (or 13-digit EAN codes outside the US) beside each item. For sale items, add the original price and discount as separate lines, or use a “WAS/NOW” note. The tool calculates line totals automatically.
  3. Set tax, payment, and download. Apply local sales tax (4–10% in most US states; 20% VAT in UK; varies in EU). Choose payment method, add card last 4 if applicable, then click Download PDF, Download PNG, or Print. For return-policy realism, add a footer message stating the return window (30, 60, 90 days, or “see store policy”).

When you actually need this tool

1. Replacing a lost receipt for a return

Most retailers will let you return an item without a receipt, but they usually issue store credit at the lowest sale price rather than a full refund to your original payment. If you have a credit card statement showing the purchase but lost the receipt, recreating the documentation can support a full-value return. Always tell the retailer the receipt is a reconstruction — most chains can also look up the original transaction by your card number via their POS system.

2. Replacing a lost receipt for warranty claims

Electronics, appliances, and tools often require proof of purchase for warranty service. If you bought a $400 power tool from Home Depot 18 months ago and the original receipt is gone, the manufacturer may accept a reconstructed receipt paired with your card statement. Always disclose the reconstruction to both the retailer and manufacturer.

3. Insurance claims for stolen or damaged property

Homeowners and renters insurance requires proof of value for stolen or damaged personal property. Receipts are the gold standard. If you’ve discarded receipts for items now stolen, recreating them based on your card statements supports the claim. Insurers generally accept reconstructions when paired with original payment evidence — disclose openly.

4. Business purchase deductions

Self-employed people, freelancers, and small business owners deduct business equipment, supplies, and tools as expenses. According to the IRS (Publication 463) and Publication 535, these expenses must be substantiated with records showing amount, date, place, and business purpose. Reconstructed retail receipts paired with card statements meet this requirement.

5. POS system testing and retail software development

If you’re building a POS system, a retail analytics platform, an OCR receipt scanner, or an inventory management tool, you need realistic retail receipts to test parsing, integrations, and screenshot mockups. The Receipt Maker tool generates clean test receipts without exposing real customer data.

6. Film, theater, and design props

A shopping bag with a receipt sticking out sells a domestic scene. A receipt in evidence on a crime drama. A branded retail identity system mockup. Productions and designers need realistic-looking retail documentation that doesn’t expose actual personal data.

Return policies — what to write in the footer

The return policy line is one of the most overlooked authenticity details on retail receipts. Real receipts always state the return window. Match the retailer:

Retailer / CategoryStandard return windowReceipt language
CostcoUnlimited (most items)“Risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee”
Target90 days (most items)“Returns accepted within 90 days with receipt”
Walmart90 days (most items)“Save your receipt for returns within 90 days”
Macy’s90 days“Returns accepted within 90 days of purchase”
Best Buy15 days standard, 30 days for Plus members“Most products may be returned within 15 days”
Apple Store14 days“Returns accepted within 14 days from receipt date”
Home Depot / Lowe’s90 days (most), 1 year for plants“Returns accepted within 90 days with receipt”
NordstromNo deadline (case by case)“We have a flexible return policy”

Barcodes — UPC at the line, Code 128 at the bottom

Real retail receipts use barcodes in two distinct places:

1. Product UPC codes appear next to each line item. UPC-A is the 12-digit format used in the US and Canada. EAN-13 is the 13-digit international standard used in Europe and most of the world. UPC-E is a compressed 8-digit version used on small products. The first 6–9 digits identify the manufacturer; the remainder identifies the product.

2. The transaction barcode appears at the bottom of the receipt — a Code 128 barcode encoding the transaction number. This is what cashiers scan when you bring a receipt back for a return. The Receipt Maker tool’s “barcode” toggle generates this Code 128 from the transaction number you enter.

Without these two distinct barcode types, a receipt looks generated. Authenticity tip: include UPC numbers (visible as 12-digit strings) beside each line item, and add the Code 128 transaction barcode at the bottom.

Tips for making your receipt look authentic

  • Include a transaction number. Real receipts have 8–12 digit transaction numbers used for return lookup. Generic “12345” looks fake.
  • Add SKU or UPC codes beside items. Real receipts always show product codes — typically 12-digit UPCs in the US. Receipts without them look generated.
  • Show the EMV chip indicator. Modern card readers show “Chip Read” or “Contactless” beside the card number. Magnetic-stripe-only receipts look pre-2015.
  • Include the return policy. Every chain prints a return window — 30, 60, 90 days, or “with receipt only.” Match the retailer.
  • Use realistic store IDs. Target stores are 4-digit (T-1842 format). Walmart stores are 4-digit. Best Buy stores are 4-digit. Apple Stores have location names rather than numbers.
  • Display “WAS/NOW” pricing for sale items. Real receipts often show original price + discount + final price for clarity.
  • Match item names to truncation conventions. Real POS systems truncate to 14–22 characters. “WOMENS COTTON CASUAL T-SHIRT” gets printed as “WMNS COT CAS TEE.”
  • Add the survey or rewards line. Most chains print a survey URL for customer feedback. Skipping this is a tell.

Privacy: how Receipt Maker handles your data

Everything you type into the tool runs in your browser. The store name, items, prices, your card last-4 — none of it touches our servers. We don’t see your receipts, we don’t store them, we don’t transmit them anywhere. When you close the browser tab, your work disappears.

For legitimate use only

The Receipt Maker tool is intended for legal purposes — replacing lost receipts (with retailer or insurer knowledge), business expense tracking, bookkeeping, warranty claim documentation, software testing, and creative or design projects. Submitting fabricated retail receipts to claim refunds for purchases you didn’t make, defraud an insurer, or commit return fraud is illegal in most jurisdictions and is strictly prohibited under our Terms of Service and Disclaimer. Frequently asked questions

How do I add SKU or UPC codes to items?

Include the SKU or UPC in the item name field — for example, “004900000123 HEYDAY EARBUDS.” Real retail receipts always show product codes beside item names, typically 12-digit UPC-A codes in the US or 13-digit EAN-13 internationally.

What sales tax rate should I use?

US state sales tax ranges from 0% (Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon — the four no-tax states) to over 10% (some California, Illinois, Washington, and Tennessee cities). Most US states fall in the 6–8% range. UK retail receipts include 20% VAT. EU varies 17–25%. Check the actual rate for the retailer’s location — if your receipt is from Chicago, use 10.25%, not a generic 8%.

How do I show discounts and sale items?

Add the original price as a line item, then add the discount as a separate negative line (“Discount -10%: -$13.45”), or show “WAS $89.99 / NOW $59.99” notation. For loyalty program savings, add a “YOU SAVED $X.XX TODAY!” line in the footer.

What return policy language should I use?

Match the retailer. Costco is unlimited, Target/Walmart/Home Depot is 90 days, Best Buy is 15 days, Apple is 14 days, Nordstrom is flexible. Use a footer line like “Returns accepted within 90 days with receipt” or “14-day return window from receipt date.”

Should I include a barcode at the bottom?

Yes — real receipts include a Code 128 barcode at the bottom encoding the transaction number, used by cashiers for return lookups. The tool’s barcode toggle generates this automatically from the transaction number you enter.

What’s the difference between a UPC and a SKU?

A UPC (Universal Product Code) is a globally registered product identifier — 12 digits in the US (UPC-A), 13 internationally (EAN-13). A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a retailer-specific internal product code. Receipts show UPCs because they’re standardized. Some retailers (especially specialty stores) use SKUs alongside or instead.

Will my receipt have a watermark?

No. Every export from Receipt Maker — PDF, PNG, JPEG, or printed — is watermark-free. We don’t gate this behind a paywall or signup.

Is it legal to use a retail receipt generator?

Using a receipt generator is legal for replacing lost receipts (with retailer or insurer knowledge), business expense tracking, bookkeeping, warranty documentation, software testing, and design work. Submitting fabricated retail receipts to claim refunds for items you didn’t buy, defraud an insurer, or commit return fraud is a criminal offense and is prohibited under our terms of service. Read our detailed legal explainer at is it legal to use a fake receipt generator.

Can I add my own store logo?

Yes. Click “Upload Logo” in the customization panel and select a PNG, JPG, or SVG file. The logo appears at the top of the receipt and renders in your PDF and PNG exports. Logos are processed locally — they’re never uploaded to any server.

What file formats can I download?

You can download as PDF (print-ready), PNG (high-resolution image with transparent background option), or JPEG (compressed for smaller file sizes). You can also use your browser’s print function to send the receipt directly to a printer.
